The practice

Shirodhara is the signature ritual of Ayurveda: a steady, warm thread of Thailam poured slowly across the forehead, quieting the mind into deep rest. Brass is the classical material for the Shirodhara vessel, holding the warmth of the oil beautifully through the ritual.

How it is used

  1. Suspend the vessel a hand's width above the forehead of the resting recipient.
  2. Fill with comfortably warm Thailam, classically Ksheerabala or Brahmi Thailam.
  3. Open the flow to a fine, unbroken thread falling on the centre of the forehead.
  4. Sweep the stream slowly from temple to temple for twenty to forty-five minutes, keeping the oil warm.
  5. Close the flow, wipe the forehead and allow a long, quiet rest.

Material & care

  • Wash with warm water and a mild soap after each session; dry completely.
  • Brass deepens in tone with use; restore the lustre with half a lemon dipped in fine salt.
  • Reserve the vessel for oil rituals only.
